The need stage
I was fortunate to be chosen as a Teaching Assistant for my National Service after my undergraduate studies in BSc. Food & Nutrition at the University of Ghana. I had little idea what the job entailed and absolutely no clue about the many opportunities that were available for graduates.
The mentoring stage
During my time as a Teaching Assistant, one Professor took great interest in me and taught me everything that I know today by the special Grace of God. He endorsed me as a candidate for both my Masters and Doctoral studies, and encouraged me every step of the way. He taught me how to write scientific publications and how to effectively communicate research findings. He also instilled a can-do attitude in me and made me understand that everything was possible if I put my mind to it.
The results stage
Today, I am an expert in the field he directed me. I receive numerous invitations to lecture at universities, research institutions and food companies across the world. I attribute this to my association with my mentor by the special Grace of God. I think it all begins to make sense and much appreciated when past colleagues meet me today and make comments like “I see your mentor in you.”
The appreciation stage
I therefore take this opportunity to thank one of the greatest Professors I have ever met, my #mentor Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, for believing in me and #mentoring me.
