Making Communication Clear: 4 Tips for Mentors

''His disciples said to Him, “See, now you are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! Now we are sure that you know all things and have no need that anyone should question you. By this we believe that you came forth from God''.

John 16: 29-30 (NKJV)

Over the weekend, I read a wonderful piece on communication from one of my favourite authors and leadership experts – John Maxwell. After reading the piece, I thought it was too good to keep to myself.

In Maxwell’s The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader, he describes four (4) truths to good communication. In my view, these truths are so important for every mentor, so I have fine-tuned his idea here purposely for mentors.

As a mentor, the success of your mentoring relationship greatly depends on communication. Chances are mentees will be confused and disappointed if they don’t understand how you’re communicating and leading them. To enhance your effective communication, try to master these 4 tips.

1. Simplify your Message

The key to effective communication is simplicity. It is important to forget about impressing people with big words and complex scenarios. If you want to connect with people, keep it simple.

2. See the Person

To be an excellent communicator in mentoring, always ask yourself these questions: Who am I connecting with (audience)? What are his/her questions or concerns? What needs to be accomplished? How can my relationship (communication) impact this person’s life?

3. Show the Truth

Credibility precedes great communication. Believe in what you say. Then live what you say or say what you live. There is no greater credibility than conviction in action.

4. Seek a Response

As you communicate, never forget that the goal of all communication is action. Every time you speak to your mentees, give them something to feel, something to remember, and something to do.

Practice these tips and check the results.
